The Body Positive
I am a lot of things. I'm the Program Manager at The Body Positive - after a year of volunteering and a year of working 3 hours a week, I just quit my full time job to accept a half time position at this dream come true of a non-profit. I've worked in education for 11 years, and specifically with girls for the past 3 years. I'm a fat yoga instructor, a former actor/singer and a current writer and visual artist (check me out! www.uniqueradicalbeauty.com)
The Body Positive is a 20-year-old non-profit that focuses on educating people about how to embrace their unique bodies so that they can fully live their lives! We have a research-based framework and curriculum for middle school, high school, and college/adult. We train young people to lead body positive groups on their campuses, we train professionals to support the clients they work with, and we offer workshops to the general public.
The Body Positive is needed because the diet and beauty industrial complexes have succeeded in convincing most people that there is something wrong with them, in the interest of making a profit. This has led to an epidemic of eating disorders, debilitating body dissatisfaction, and in too many cases, the loss of lives. The Body Positive addresses this problem through our research-based and effective curriculum for students and education/health professionals. We train people to run student-led Be Body Positive groups on their high school and college campuses and we are working to prevent young people from growing up with body hatred so that they can use their energy and resources to follow their passions and focus on fixing the world, rather than on fixing their bodies.
How You Can Help:
Now that body positivity is finally becoming more of a mainstream concept, we want people to know about us! We are currently raising money to develop an online learning platform so that people all over the world can access our trainings. We hope to empower young people and the professionals who work with them to change the atmospheres on school campuses from places that are notorious for bullying and self-harm, to ones where all students have respect and reverence for the diversity of the human form, including their own. We envision a world where people possess genuine self-love and are free to experience their own authentic beauty--a world where a compassionate, forgiving voice is consistently brought forth to counteract self-criticism, where having an appetite for life is both honored and valued.
