Meet Carmen:

 

In many people’s minds, disability is a word that causes discomfort. For me, it has created opportunity.  When I was 20 years-old I was injured in a car accident and became a paraplegic. In addition to having a physical disability, I also had a son named Marcus who was born with developmental disabilities. He had a tracheostomy tube and was non-verbal and taught me so much about how to best support parents who have kids with disabilities. Marcus died at the age of 8, in 2009. Along my journey I recognized that companies target me as a woman and Af-American, but not as a person with a disability. As a marketing strategist, I work with companies, NGOs and government agencies to help them develop build bridges to reach 56M PwD in the U.S. 

 

 

Her Passion:

 

I am working on creating an online marketing course - the Disability Market Boot Camp -  that will be 8 to 12 weeks long. Through a series of modules, the user will be guided through how they can understand, penetrate and retain the disability market. The course is designed to benefit anyone, regardless of their position as a small business owner or corporate executive. My goal is to remove the barriers that keep decision-makers from gaining understanding and insight to really understand how to connect with this untapped, overlooked community. 

 

The project is important because there are few opportunities for companies to understand, really understand how to support the disability market well. The work I’m doing blends my marketing expertise with my personal life experience as a mother of a child with disabilities, as well as my personal story. So few companies target me as a consumer, guest or employee. I feel a course that doesn’t just focus on why this is important, but it guides the participant through the how. 

 

What I hope to accomplish is naturally to generate additional business, but to also demystify disability so decision-makers have enough insight and information to create a disability-friendly culture, where guests and potential employees are valued.
