I am a Cuban American mermaid, Caribbean Medusa, dragon-slayer and post Colonial snake charmer. A documentary filmmaker, empowerer of women, raven haired bellydancer and undulating alchemist. A Curator of contemporary expression, Educator, performer and writer. A shapeshifting introvert, activist and lover of life, transformation, pugs, wine and coffee.
My Passion Project is Havana Habibi; a documentary film and women’s empowerment project.
Havana Habibi the film documents a 13 year journey of healing, transformation and identity while teaching bellydance in Havana, Cuba, the land of my parents and ancestors. Using the global movement language of bellydance as both an aesthetic practice and empowerment tool, Havana Habibi maps a path of social transformation, engagement, personal development, transcultural enrichment and understanding, intellectual interrogation and gender performativity.
Currently, the film has just been completed and I am working on a book project and series of dance/human development workshops. The sister project to Havana Habibi is “Dancing my (mother’s) Body”, which is a series of workshops, writing and performances based on my personal “hanan method” of pedagogy and the philosophies of Helene Cixous and Deleuze and Guattari.
How You Can Help:
Currently I am working on the world premiere of Havana Habibi for December 2016 in Havana, Cuba. The premiere will be contextualized with a series of programs; talks, workshops, performances, art exhibits and empowering outreach events for the Cuban people as well as international participants. I am currently in need of financial support to make these unique and transformative programs happen.
